Meet Scott Gooding.

Scott is a husband and a father of two boys… with another on the way! He’s also a holistic nutrition and performance coach. He’s written some fantastic books including The Keto Diet and The Sustainable Diet, he wrote the latter to helps us navigate our ever more complicated food systems.

We appreciate his holistic approach and the fact that he doesn’t take it all too seriously. We thought he was a good person to ask about skipping brekky... as well as two topics close to his heart - nourishing babies and crowd-pleasing BBQ recipes.

Skipping brekky - what's your take?

Skipping breakfast has been getting a lot of airtime the last couple of years as it leans into the restricted feeding window or intermittent fasting (IF).

Look, mealtimes are only social constructs and if someone has a propensity to overeat across the day then restricting a meal, be it breakfast or dinner, will help to curb over-eating. Conversely, if someone is a habitual under-eater then it’s arguably not the best prescription. One of the primary aims of IF is to reap the benefits of autophagy or cellular ‘cleansing’ but it’s worth noting that this is occurring naturally all the time and yes it does up-regulate during a fasted state but also during exercise so there are other ways to skin the cat. If someone is a life-long sugar-burner I’d recommend a step-wise approach to fasting rather than jumping straight in… be smart about it and consult with a professional.

Getting babies to eat good food - what are the big myths you don't believe in and what's been your biggest a ha moment when it comes to getting your little ones eating good food?

I guess the biggest myth is that we should be prescribing to the snacks/foods/formulas that supermarket aisles tempt us with. I’ve found that my kids have enjoyed the types of foods that my wife and I eat - natural and unprocessed…but full of flavour and the health-promoting nutrients.

The other thing is when they are 4-6months old and ready for solids, I have to remind myself that they have their own likes/dislike and proclivities to certain flavours which might not marry to mine. There is a great deal of trial and error in those early years.

And finally, I need to remember that the time I want to eat may not collide with the time that my kids want to eat on any given day! To avoid the frustration, allow some wiggle room with meal timings.

BBQs - what are you go-to BBQ meals that always please a crowd?

Scott’s answer came in the form of two cracking recipes; BBQ Chicken with Romesco Sauce and BBQ MSC Banana Prawns. As with all of Scott’s recipes, they are gluten free, anti inflammatory and made with love. Just the type of cooking we adore.
