We thought she would be the perfect person to ask our burning questions to this month as she has fun, seemingly effortless entertaining dialled in. Let’s just say we wouldn’t mind being at her Christmas table!!

Over to Lucy for some pearls of wisdom…

Your top fuss-free festive hacks so you're outside more and in the kitchen less?

  • Tone it down! we don’t live north of the wall (hemisphere) so reserve the long winded, slow roasting, hot simmered recipes for our winter.

  • Yeah yeah prep. make a glaze now. make a chicken wing gravy now. make salad dressings now. boil spuds with garlic now. and freeze it all. as far as salads leaves, herbs and fresh stuff goes: trim it, slice it, rinse it, wrap it in paper towel and bag it the day before. it’ll be snappy as f**k when you need to plate it.

  • Commit to a morning swim before the day gets too hot. It’s a perfect reminder of what the day is actually about, dunking your children.

How do you whip a table together with less fuss?

  • My go to tablecloth is a Bunnings canvas drop sheet (not lined!). you can get them huge and cut them down or just let the drapes hit the floor. That’s only if my Cultiver linen is in the wash.

  • Throwing down a handful of paper confetti makes an instant party.

  • Tiny details like wrapping lemons in muslin to catch pips, cutting butter into individual chunks and placing on baking paper and flavouring water with mint and orange really make people feel special. tiny efforts, lots of impact.

We spied those simple sausage rolls you made that would be so good for easy entertaining or a last minute kids dinner, what do you always have in your freezer and pantry for emergency meals or entertaining over the festive season?

  • Always stock! perfect gravy makers.

  • Dumplings, for evening or next day dining!

  • Good quality dressings and sauces, I try not to dress things on the day so that we can keep eating untitled leftovers for days. we are a DIY dressing family!
